Seasonable and Reasonable Commitment

God takes us through different times and seasons in our lives. In some instances we are called to be committed for a season to something, or to a person or to a type of work and then that season ends. God may call us to another location and because of that we need to end some of our commitments. When we do that, we should bring the best of understanding to all concerned. For instance if you have been committed to a local church for a season you should explain that to your leaders and pastor saying, “Sorry that the season of our life is ending here, but it seems like God is taking us forward and that we would get a blessing of release to go on to the next phase that God has in our life.” We would call all of this a seasonal commitment to a cause.

There are others things that we are called to be committed to that are not seasonal. Our commitment to Christ is a forever commitment. We love Him until we die, and serve Him until we die. Commitments to the principals that God has ordained for us to walk in are non negotiable commitments. In a marriage ceremony it speaks of “for better or for worse until death do us part”, not until the dishwasher breaks down and we have an argument that we do not want to resolve. Commitment to paying our bills, to love our neighbor as ourselves, is not seasonal but a forever thing. Pray without ceasing is a commitment in our life that is not negotianable. Pray for those who are in authority is not something that we jump in and out of commitment.

Love and care for the body of Christ in spite of some of the difficulties and tensions that arise, is something that we are committed to do. God doesn’t want our commitment to those important things to be seasonal; He wants it to be reasonable in light of how Jesus gave His life in commitment for us. We commit ourselves to those things that should last forever.
