A Day to Express Gratitude

Let’s take a quick glance at the history of Mother’s Day. Some say it takes us back to goddess worship among the Egyptians, Romans, and the Greeks who deify certain mythological females such as: Isis, Cybele and Rhea. This is not what we follow.

In more recent years Mother’s Day was established to honor the person and efforts of mothers in our world. In Europe the hard working lower classes were given time off to return home to honor and spend time with their mothers and families.

In 1870 Julia Word Howe made a declaration against civil war where sons were killing sons. Julia saw the futility of this, calling for an international day to celebrate peace and motherhood. Late in 1908 Anna Jarvis devoted her life to establishing Mother’s Day. By petition the government and business was adopted and it spread to many countries of the world.

While we do not believe that we should deify mothers as did the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks, we do believe it is in order to give honor where honor is due.

So today we say to all mothers “Thank you for mothering us with kindness, love, understanding and perseverance. Please accept the gifts that we give as a sign of our appreciation.”
