The Wisdom of Humility

“And be clothed with humility for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

I Peter 5:5

We can never be more wise, successful or Christ-like then when we humble ourselves. Christ was clothed with the strength of humility. Humility is the strength or grace to yield, when the temptation would be there to fight. It is giving up our sovereignty for His. Humility is what Christ did when he was reviled. He did not respond with hatred, but committed Himself to the one who judges righteously. God came to His defence. He did this by raising Him from the dead and justifying Him in His deeds for time and eternity.

Both humility and pride are a personal choice. We can choose to humble or exalt ourselves. If we humble ourselves we will be exalted to our high calling in due time.

We will find rest for our souls and we will inherit the earth, according to His promises.

If we exalt ourselves, we loose that inner peace and forfeit the many blessings that come to the humble. By humility the small become great. However by pride, the great become small. Whoever exalts themselves will be brought low in due time. On the other hand, whoever humbles themselves will be brought to honour. In view of this we humble ourselves under the almighty hand of God to be exalted in due time for his honour and glory.
